CHARACTER PROGRAM |
Toward the end of my teaching career I noticed that my sophomores were increasingly coming to the conclusion that there was a point in their childhood when it was natural for them to rebel against their parents. I discouraged such thinking whenever I got the chance. One day during a discussion of the matter one of my students said to me, ”Mr. Jenkins, didn’t you rebel against your parents when you were our age?” I assured him that my mere presence there in the classroom was an indication that I hadn’t rebelled against my parents. However, that evening I thought about the question and thought that my students deserved a better answer. I decided to write a poem, but did not actually write it until three years later after my mother died. This is the poem that I wrote for my students and for all young people who think that it is natural to rebel against their parents. I also wrote it for those of us who didn’t. I hope you enjoy it. This poster depicts the twenty-five cherished values of the American people. These are the values around which the Values First program is built. It is fitting that the American flag serves as the background for these values, for the values serve as the backbone for the greatness of America.
